When we last checked in, the cafe in the heart of Sydney’s CBD had been open for just over a month.
And that was before its new owners, a local business called Panda Cafe, launched their new “Pandora” cafe.
“Pandoras are like a bunch of panda bears, you can only have one in your house,” says Panda cafe owner Terry Pye.
“So when we opened it, it was like the coolest place in the world.”
‘Pandorans’ are native to Asia, but they’ve been making a comeback in Australia in recent years. “
We had people come in here and they said ‘you have a little bear that you can pet’, and then they were like ‘okay then’.” “We got people coming from all over Australia, they’re just really loving it.”

Pye’s been working on a new cafe for over a year, but he’s already seen an “influencer” come on board and he says Panda’s popularity has been huge.
“They’re doing really well, they’ve got over 20,000 likes on their Facebook page, and they’re actually going out of business in a couple of weeks,” he says.
The cafe will now be renamed “Pandas Cafe” and will be open from 10am to 11pm. “
Theres no doubt they’re going to be here for the foreseeable future.”

“You can have as many pandas as you want,” Pye says.
Puneet Choudhury, a freelance journalist, has written about the pandoras for over 10 years.
“I’ve spent two years researching them and I’m just amazed by their story and the stories they have told,” he told us.
“It’s really cool that pandas are getting a new lease of life in Australia.”
What do you think?
Does the new Panda cafe fit into the trend of ‘Pandas’ cafes becoming popular in Australia?
