Old West cafe owner Joe O’Brien says it’s been a “long, slow, lonely road” but he’s finally getting to a place where the cafe can finally get back to its former glory.
In the past 12 months, the café has become the most-visited restaurant in the area, with an average of over 5,000 visits per week.
“I’ve had to work really hard to get to where I am today,” O’Briens son Brendan said.
“The biggest thing I’ve learnt is that you have to love it.
You can’t control it, but you can control the fact you’re here.”
For years, the old West cafe was just a one-man operation.
But in the last couple of years, O’Brian and his brother, Brendan, started looking to expand the business.
“We had to go to a business school to get the necessary permits to open the cafe,” Brendan O’Brady said.
The two decided to put the business up for sale.
“We had a little bit of cash and it just kind of snowballed from there,” O-Brians son Brendan O. told RTE.
They started looking for a location and eventually found a vacant building in the city’s inner-ring.
“It was a lovely little old building and we were able to bring it back to life and we’ve had a pretty good relationship with the owner,” Brendan said of the new restaurant.
O’Brien said the cafe has been a good fit for the neighbourhood.
“Old West has always been the most hipster, old-school cafe in town,” O’,Brien said.
He said the owners of the old west cafe have been the inspiration for the new cafe.
“In the old days, the owners would go out and buy their drinks from the counter, they’d have a coffee and they’d sit down,” OBrien said, adding that the owners will now be making the cafe a family-friendly destination.
“For me, it’s all about the food.
There’s not many other cafes in town that are family-oriented,” he said.
Overnight, O’,Brian’s cafe is now selling out of coffee, and he’s hoping to expand his business even further.
“Every week, we get around 5,500 people coming in.
They’ve come to see what the new sunrise cafe is all about,” O”Brien said of his business.
